The women’s strawweight battle between Shauna Bannon and Nicolle Caliari will be the first bout of the UFC Vegas 117 card on Saturday, which takes place inside the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.

Despite her two-fight losing streak, Caliari still heads into the showdown as the betting favorite with -275 UFC odds, while Bannon will be the +220 betting underdog.

UFC Vegas 117: Shauna Bannon vs. Nicolle Caliari: Prediction

With the speed advantage on her side, I predict a decision win for Caliari over Bannon. Despite being the shorter fighter with reach and leg reach disadvantages, Caliari closes the distance effectively with her forward pressure.

Her explosiveness and athleticism will also greatly help Caliari land the more damaging strikes on Bannon. The MMA star from Ireland doesn’t have quick head movement, which makes her susceptible to jabs and one-two combinations.

However, Caliari should be cautious of the side kicks or oblique kicks that Bannon likes to throw to control the distance. Those kicks can slow her down if Caliari doesn’t dodge or check them, especially in the opening stages of the fight.

Shauna Bannon’s Recent Fight Results

Bannon was a former Cage Legacy champion before signing with the UFC in 2023. In her four fights inside the octagon, she recorded two wins against Alice Ardelean and Puja Tomar and lost to Bruna Brasil and Sam Hughes.

Nicolle Caliari’s Recent Fight Results

Caliari’s route to the UFC was via Dana White’s Contender Series in 2024, where she submitted Corinne Laframboise in the first round of their match to secure a UFC contract. However, in her first two appearances under the promotion, she dropped her fights to Ernesta Kareckaite and Carli Judice.
