Ezekiel Elliott capped a 12-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to extend the Dallas Cowboys lead to 11 points, 14-3, in the second quarter of their Week 10 game against the Atlanta Falcons. That’s all the Cowboys, a 7.5-point home favorite, needed to cover the spread and continue the most unbelievable NFL betting trend this season.
Through the first nine weeks of the season, there were 31 games in which one team entered with an ATS losing streak of at least one game played a team with an ATS winning streak of at least one game, i.e., a team that didn’t cover in their previous game vs. a team that did cover in their previous game. The ATS-losing-streak team was 25-6 (.806) against the spread.
With the Cowboys’ cover and the Carolina Panthers’ cover – +7 in an outright win over the Arizona Cardinals – the ATS-losing-streak team has 27 covers (.818) through 10 weeks. It’s already 15 more covers than all of last year.
ATS-losing-streak teams went just 12-15 last year, failing to finish above .500 in those spots for the sixth straight season. From 2015-20, those teams went 89-107-3 (.455), more than 36 percentage points lower than this year’s cover rate.
