The Washington Football Team’s Odds Going Into Week 7

After winning the NFC East last season, Washington Football Team fans were excited about the 2021-22 season. Although preseason odds showed them as +500 to win the NFC East again, their current NFL odds stand at +1200.

As of Week 7 of the NFL season, the Washington Football Team has three losses and must play more consistently to defeat the Green Bay Packers.

Defensive Struggles Against the Pass

The losses that the Washington Football Team have faced this season have nothing to do with lack of talent. Instead, Chase Young, Daron Payne, Montez Sweat, and Jonathan Allen should be one of the best defensive lines in the league.

The defense has been a disappointment so far this season partly because of an inability to sack the quarterback. While Washington is 8th in quarterback hurries per dropback at 12.5%, they only have 12 sacks on the year, which is 19th in the league.

Their secondary also struggles, giving up 7.9 yards per pass attempt, tied for 11th worst in the NFL. They’ve given up the most passing yards (1857) and most passing touchdowns (16), and the average depth of target from opposing teams is 4th highest at 9.6. This means that opposing quarterbacks feel comfortable throwing deep passes against Washington.

If the D.C. football team expects to beat the Green Bay Packers, who have veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the defense will have to limit those deep plays and get more sacks.

An Injured Offense?

The WFT’s chances against the Packers depend greatly on the health of Antonio Gibson. In Week 5, many analysts questioned whether Gibson could play because he was dealing with a stress fracture in his shin.

For many, it was safe to assume that he wouldn’t be able to handle a full workload without being 100% healthy. Yet, Gibson participated in 47 snaps and had 22 touches in the loss against the Saints. However, in Week 6, he only participated in 23 snaps.

If Washington wants to beat the Packers, they’ll need Gibson on the field for between 47-57 plays. Washington will have to control the pace of the game to keep it close.

Washington Football Team Week 7 Betting Odds

The Washington Football Team is currently listed as 9.5-point underdogs in their Week 7 matchup against the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the game, while Washington’s pass defense has struggled against longer pass plays this year. If Washington can’t keep the Packers’ offense off the field, this game could get ugly.

I believe that the Packers should win and cover the 9.5-point spread. However, even if Gibson can handle a full load, I’m not convinced that the defense can limit Aaron Rodgers and keep him out of the end zone.
