I love the over on the Mystics’ win total (17.5), projecting them to take another step forward in their rebuild. The 2026 season is all about figuring out how its young core fits together while playing meaningful games for much of the campaign.
The Mystics have been in rebuild mode for the last two years, winning 30 games. But they have quickly built an exciting young group through the draft.
In 2025, the Mystics selected Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen with back-to-back picks. They both earned All-Star nods as rookies. Citron averaged 14.9 points and demonstrated impressive shotmaking, while Iriafen added 13.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
The rookie who didn’t get to play last year was Georgia Amoore, who missed the entire 2025 campaign after suffering a torn ACL in an April practice. Amoore, a 5-foot-6 point guard, can provide Washington with some much-needed playmaking in her debut season.
Center Lauren Betts, who led UCLA to its first national championship this spring, will also look to make an immediate impact with the Mystics. It will be interesting to see how Betts fits with Shakira Austin, who is staying with the team after Washington matched the Toronto Tempo’s offer in free agency.
Washington is a young team, so there will be some growing pains. However, there are wins to be had when facing the bottom tier of the league.
The Mystics can set the tone when they travel to Toronto for their opener. They will face one of the two new expansion teams, but it’s a winnable game that could help gauge how ready the Mystics are to ascend in 2026.
