Wings vs. Fever Prediction: WNBA Preview for Saturday, May 9

Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings will clash with Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in the marquee matchup of the WNBA’s opening weekend. Tipoff is 1 p.m. ET on Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on ABC.

Indiana is a 7.5-point favorite in this much-anticipated matchup, but I’m focusing on the total for my Wings vs. Fever prediction ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

Wings vs. Fever Prediction: Saturday, May 9

  • Under 175.5 (-105)

Based on the updated WNBA odds, I like the under on my full-game total (175.5) as my Wings vs. Fever prediction on Saturday.

These two teams combined for 175 points in their preseason meeting, with the Wings earning a 95-80 win. There were 59 total free-throw attempts in that matchup.

But I’m expecting more defense and fewer fouls in a game that matters on Saturday. It’s also an opportunity to bank on some underrated defensive improvement for both squads.

The Wings bolstered their frontcourt by signing Alanna Smith (2025 co-Defensive Player of the Year) and Jessica Shepard. Both players contributed to the Minnesota Lynx ranking second in 2-point defense last year, whereas the Wings were 11th out of 13 teams in that metric.

Indiana, meanwhile, has room for more improvement in Stephanie White’s second season at the helm. The Fever ranked seventh in defensive rating during her first season, up from 11th in 2024.

Aliyah Boston has the second-best WNBA Defensive Player of the Year odds after winning the DPOY trophy in Unrivaled.

Indiana went 26-24-1 to the under last year, but it had only three totals as high as Saturday’s. In those three matchups, the Fever went 2-1 to the under, including their 88-78 win over the Wings on Aug. 1, finishing below the closing total of 175.5.

I’ll take the under on the highest total of the WNBA’s opening weekend.

Prediction: Under 175.5 (-105)
