National federations do pay players selected by managers to compete at tournaments like the FIFA World Cup.

Generally, federations pay players for each match the country plays at the tournament. Some countries also award bonuses based on the finish.

For example, England offered players a performance bonus for winning the 2022 World Cup. Ultimately, the Three Lions fell short by losing to France in the quarterfinals.

Match salaries pale in comparison to the wages players earn with their clubs. As an example, Kylian Mbappe reportedly earned $17,000 per match with France in Qatar.

Comparatively, he earns just over $31 million per season in his current Real Madrid deal.

Players also earn a portion of the World Cup Prize Money distributed to each federation. However, federations decide these amounts largely based on the finishing position.
