Colombia vs Switzerland: World Cup Odds
Switzerland vs Colombia Prediction
Based on Switzerland’s misleading defensive performance vs. Algeria and Colombia’s travel disadvantage, my Colombia vs Switzerland prediction is Both Teams to Score – “Yes” (-102).
The Swiss defense kept its first clean sheet of the tournament against Algeria. However, the unit survived a couple early chances that could have produced an Algeria goal.
In the first half, Algeria created two big scoring chances and 0.5 expected goals. Before the UEFA outfit scored the opener, Algeria missed a chance worth 0.3 xG on six minutes.
Bettors should generally approach the Swiss defense with skepticism. While the unit has conceded only 3.2 expected goals, the competition leaves much to be desired.
Manager Murat Yakin’s side has yet to face a top-20 opponent by soccer ELO ratings. Colombia will mark the first real test for the European side at #7 in the ratings.
Still, the Swiss defense allowed chances galore against Canada, its hardest opponent to date. Canada scored from 2-0 down to cash BTTS – “Yes” while creating 1.7 expected goals.
Colombia also produced a dominant attacking performance against Portugal. Currently, I rate the Portuguese defense ahead of the Swiss unit.
Despite failing to score, the South American side generated 1.7 expected goals against Portugal.
Arguably the biggest surprise of the tournament so far is Switzerland’s attacking record. Again, it has come against easy opposition, but the attack still generated 2.5 xG against Algeria.
Colombia simultaneously faces a difficult scheduling spot. Switzerland played a day earlier before their July 7 meeting and will stay in Vancouver for the round of 16.
Manager Nestor Lorenzo will have to take his side to Canada with less rest after playing in Kansas City. It will surprise me if that results in a clean sheet from a semi-fraudulent unit.
On paper, Colombia keeping a clean sheet against Portugal is impressive. But I actually place more trust in the Swiss attack than Portugal’s current construction.
Colombia also surrendered 1.1 xG against Uzbekistan on Matchday 1. It leads me to believe there’s more volatility to the defense than meets the eye, leading to a BTTS – “Yes” prediction.
