The first round of World Cup group play concludes on Wednesday with Colombia vs Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan arrives at its first World Cup appearance in less-than-ideal form. They lost both pre-tournament friendlies, including a 2-0 defeat against host nation Canada.

Colombia reeled off two straight wins after dropping points against France and Croatia. They enter this match having won five of their previous six World Cup group matches.

Uzbekistan vs Colombia Prediction

Based on Uzbekistan’s poor attacking results as an underdog and Colombia’s defensive strength, my Uzbekistan vs Colombia prediction is Uzbekistan Under 0.5 Goals (-118).

It’s a brutal situational spot for underdog Uzbekistan. The team’s training base is in Atlanta, but the schedule places their match against Colombia in Mexico City.

At minimum, it’s going to take some adjustment to play at altitude. More concerning is that Colombia holds training in Guadalajara, so it will be used to the situational factors.

If that weren’t enough, Uzbekistan struggled to generate meaningful chances in pre-tournament friendlies.

While the attack scored against the Netherlands, it came in second-half stoppage time. Over two matches against Canada and the Dutch, Uzbekistan generated only 1.4 expected goals.

Colombia showed improved defensive play in its final friendly against Jordan. After conceding in three straight, the unit kept a clean sheet.

In that match, Jordan managed only five touches in the box.

The last time we saw Colombia in competition was the 2024 Copa America. Defensively, the team surrendered a goal only three times in six matches. Two came against Brazil & Argentina.

Colombia has since struggled to maintain defensive form in World Cup qualifying and friendlies. But with the level of competition decreasing in this opener, I predict they will keep a clean sheet.
