Based on World Cup odds, Spain winger Lamine Yamal is to win the Golden Boot.
Yamal, the talisman for FC Barcelona at age 18, will play his first World Cup. This season, he scored 16 goals with the Spanish power (T-1st) and added 11 assists.
At the 2024 UEFA Euros, Lamal scored only once in Spain’s title run. However, he supplemented it with four assists to lead all players.
Lamine Yamal Golden Boot Prediction & Analysis
Due to Lamal’s potential injury concerns and the fact that teammate Mikel Oyazarbal takes penalty kicks, I predict Lamal will not win the Golden Boot.
From a historical trends standpoint, a solid chance exists that Spain features the 2026 Golden Boot winner.
The World Cup co-favorites benefit from a very easy group draw to start. In two of their three matches, they get Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
Both send out some of the weakest defenses in the entire tournament. In Spain’s opener against the former, over 3.5 goals is priced at -120, as of this writing.
Spain showed in a 7-0 win over Costa Rica four years ago it can run up the score. The question mark is, in the event of a couple of routs, how the goals get distributed.
Prior Golden Boot winners managed high tallies rapidly. Four years ago, Kylian Mbappe scored five goals in the group stage. Harry Kane scored five of six in the group stage eight years ago.
In my Spain World Cup Prediction, I broke down how a run to the semifinals offers high probability. Three of the last four Golden Boot winners reached the semis.
Here’s where the case for Yamal starts to fall apart. Toward the end of his Barcelona season, he saw reduced action due to injury concerns.
Manager Luis de la Fuente hinted the lingering injury could keep him out of the World Cup opener. For Spain, there’s no need to rush him back in a match where it’s a -1000 favorite.
Additionally, Spain teammate Oyazarbal takes penalty kicks, even when Yamal features in the Starting XI.
The common thread amongst past winners? They fulfilled their team’s spot kick assignments. It lessens the burden for those players when it comes to their Golden Boot candidacy.
It’s not to say Lamal can’t win the award. He simply needs to find enough goals elsewhere to overcome a teammate who could score via two methods.
Those factors lead me to consider other options within this market instead of Yamal.
