  • Switzerland is predicted to be a 1.5-goal favorite against Qatar.
  • Qatar has failed to win each of its last six fixtures, scoring only twice.
  • My Switzerland vs Qatar prediction is Switzerland Win to Nil (-135).

The opening round of Group B features Switzerland as a heavy favorite against Qatar.

Switzerland beat Jordan 4-1 in the first of two pre-tournament friendlies. Over its last five matches, the UEFA outfit dropped all three points only once to Germany.

Qatar qualifies as a beneficiary of the expanded World Cup. It reached the final stage of Asian World Cup qualifying, beating the UAE on home soil to advance to the World Cup.

Qatar vs Switzerland Prediction

Based on Switzerland’s defensive record and Qatar’s troubling defensive metrics against good teams, my Switzerland vs Qatar prediction is a SGP: Switzerland ML & BTTS – “No” (-135).

I’ll be shocked if Qatar maneuvers around an outstanding Switzerland defense. While it’s a slight concern Switzerland conceded to Jordan, it came after some key personnel changes.

Before that match, Switzerland kept a clean sheet against a high-powered Norway attack. The unit features Man City’s Erling Haaland, who exited after an hour.

In competition, Switzerland concedes few scoring chances. At the 2024 Euros, Switzerland kept three of its five opponents under one expected goal. Hungary and Germany exempted the rule.

During World Cup qualifying, Switzerland surrendered only two goals over its final six matches. Once came on short rest after a trip to Kosovo, who stayed under one expected goal.

Recent Qatari fixtures have seen the 2022 host nation struggle. The attack generated only 0.8 expected goals against Ireland, down from 1.4 against Tunisia.

Albeit under different management, Qatar struggled at the previous World Cup. In three group matches, the attack scored only once against Senegal.

Against Ecuador and the Netherlands, which offer similar defensive tests to Switzerland, Qatar generated only 0.4 and 0.15 xG, per FotMob.

Defensively, Qatar lacks the depth necessary to keep out Switzerland’s attack. Since June 2023, Qatar has played four competitive matches against top-40 FIFA teams.

The defense surrendered 1.65 expected goals per 90 minutes. Three of four opponents finished over 1.25 expected goals.

Accordingly, I predict Switzerland will keep a clean sheet while taking maximum points.
