VAR stands for “video assistant referee” in global soccer matches.

VAR in Soccer Explained

IFAB introduced the technology in March 2018 for competitive matches. FIFA subsequently used VAR during the 2018 World Cup, along with the 2022 World Cup.

VAR featured in the English Premier League beginning with the 2019-20 season.

Put simply, VAR serves as a method for on-field referees to correct “clear and obvious errors” during matches. The technology mostly checks goal validity, but also checks other decisions.

For example, VAR officials may recommend a review of a potential red card or penalty kick.

The reviews are then communicated to the on-field referee, who can visit a pitchside monitor to review the decision.

VAR is not without controversy, however.

Critics of the technology maintain that it leads to games getting re-refereed and that some decisions don’t meet the “clear and obvious” threshold.
