Historical World Cup odds see matches trend toward lower-scoring fixtures.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar averaged 2.7 goals per match. However, 53% of all matches finished under 2.5 goals.
Thirty-eight percent of those fixtures finished under 1.5 total goals. It marked a sizable increase from the 2018 World Cup, which saw 27% finish under 1.5 goals and 52% under 2.5 goals.
Modern World Cups generally see lower-scoring fixtures.
Only once since the 2002 World Cup has over 2.5 goals hit at a rate north of 52%. In 2002 and 2006, bettors saw under 2.5 goals hit at a 58% rate or higher.
The 2014 World Cup in Brazil saw an increase in goals. However, it stemmed from a disproportionate number of matches landing on three goals.
Twenty matches in Brazil landed on exactly three goals. That number declined to 19 in 2018 and 14 in 2022.
