World Cup Golden Ball Prediction

Bruno Fernandes (+2500)

Predicting the Golden Ball winner offers the most intrigue amongst the World Cup awards. You’d think it automatically goes to someone from the winning team, but history suggests otherwise.

Before Lionel Messi’s win in 2022, the last time a Golden Ball winner also won the World Cup came in 1994. Now, the caveat: five winners have seen their team lose in the final.

If there’s a cause for concern with Fernandes, it’s that any Portugal success may earn Cristiano Ronaldo voting consideration.

Ronaldo has yet to win the Golden Ball despite countless Ballon D’Or wins. However, a deep Portugal run is likely to coincide with Ronaldo contending for the Golden Boot.

That could open the door for Fernandes as the creative engine of the Portuguese midfield. He’ll begin the World Cup fresh off a wildly successful campaign with Manchester United.

Fernandes led the Premier League in assists, adding eight goals for the Red Devils.

Portugal, assuming they win the group, would sit on the opposite side of France and Spain.

If odds hold, the group winners on their side would be Brazil, Mexico, England, Switzerland and Argentina. None of those teams scare me enough to worry about Portugal.

It leads me to consider Fernandes at a lofty price with a potentially high ceiling.
