  • Moneyline betting is simply betting on which team will win a game.
  • The Houston Astros had the largest moneyline since 2005, with -521 in Sept. 2019.

MLB Betting is a particularly hot choice for those who enjoy a little flutter, mainly because the season extends from spring training in March/April to the World Series in November. So whether you prefer betting against the spread or going for a simple moneyline, there’s something for everyone for almost two-thirds of the year.

Arguably the most basic way to play on the online sportsbook, betting the moneyline is simply choosing which team you think will win the game. The team doesn’t have to win by a certain number of runs, and there are no conditions — they just need to end the game victorious over their opponent.

So with the simple odds-to-win still an overwhelming cult favorite, what have been the largest moneylines over the last 18 seasons?

Houston Astros — Aug./Sept. 2019

The Astros hold the top three spots for largest moneyline odds, all of which came in the 2019 season. Houston had odds of -521 against the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 22, -518 against the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 21, and -503 against the Tigers on Aug. 22.

While the Astros won their games on Aug. 22 and Sept. 22, bettors on all three of the above games didn’t walk away entirely happy. Despite their considerable moneyline odds, the Astros lost 2-1 to the Tigers on Aug. 21 in quite the upset to the home crowd.

Los Angeles Dodgers — June 4, 2016

When they took on the Atlanta Braves on Jun. 4, 2016, the Dodgers had moneyline odds of -485. Playing at their home field of Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles eventually won the game 4-0, proving why the team’s odds were so incredible.

New York Mets — Sept. 25, 2019

The Mets had impressive moneyline odds of -468 when they faced the Miami Marlins on Sept. 25, 2019. Unsurprisingly, the team Mets ended up beating the Marlins 10-3 on the road in Miami, making big moneyline bettors very happy.
