No, Lamar Jackson does not have an agent representing him during ongoing contract negotiations with the Baltimore Ravens. Instead, Jackson is leading negotiations for his second NFL contract on his own. He’s also receiving some help from his mother, Felicia Jones, who is working as his manager.

The absence of a traditional agent is likely a major factor in Jackson’s lack of a second contract with the Ravens. The ongoing uncertainty has led to only a temporary solution – Lamar Jackson was hit with the Ravens’ franchise tag on March 7.

Nobody in the public arena likes giving up a portion of their salary to their agent. After all, guys like Lamar Jackson are special, one-of-a-kind NFL players.

Agents, on the other hand, get paid for talking and owning a thick rolodex – not exactly a unique skill set.

Still, there’s a reason the vast majority of high-profile athletes (and other famous people) retain the services of an agent. While players read defenses, it’s agents that often read (or even create) the market for players.

On the heels of the Browns’ unprecedented contract with Deshaun Watson, Jackson may be asking for an unreasonable, unobtainable amount of money.

An agent who’s less emotionally attached to the amount of money Jackson is paid might prove to be a more rational actor in a long, drawn-out battle for negotiations.
