When Is College Football Playoff Expansion to 12 Teams?

The College Football Playoff (four teams) began in 2014 and overall has been good for the sport, but it soon will be tweaked.

In December 2022, the College Football Playoff (CFP) Board of Managers agreed to expand the playoffs to 12 teams, which is great news when it comes to college football betting.

"I think it will create unbelievable excitement for college football," K-State coach Chris Klieman said of the 12-team playoff. He said he thinks it will eventually expand to 16.

When Is College Football Playoff Expansion to 12 Teams?

The College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams beginning with the 2024-25 season.

The first round of the playoff in 2024 will take place the week ending Saturday, December 21, at either the home field of the higher-seeded team, or at another site designated by the higher-seeded institution. (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7, and No. 9 at No. 8.)

The four quarterfinal games and two Playoff semifinal games will be played at bowls on a rotating basis.

In 2024, the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl will play host to the quarterfinals, while the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl will host the Playoff Semifinals.

The national championship will be played January 20, 2025, in Atlanta.

Through the first nine years of the playoff, 13 different teams have made the four-team field. Only seven teams have multiple playoff appearances.
