Best College Basketball Bets Today

Every day, I’ll handicap games early in the morning (east coast time) and provide a short explanation as to why I like them.

Idaho State vs Northern Arizona (-3.5), Analysis

I happened to catch most of Northern Arizona’s Montana swing over the past four days, seeing as I am a college basketball degenerate that loves nothing more than to dial up Big Sky games at random hours of the day.

What the market is likely not keyed into is that Northern Arizona is playing some of its best basketball of the season right now.

Some small sharp action is starting to move this line toward Idaho State, and my theory is that sharps want to fade NAU here because its the Jacks’ third game in five days.

But Idaho State is on the road two days after it played, too, so I think fatigue is a two-way street. This seems like a nice spot to bet on a team that’s playing really well right now at a low cost.

Idaho State vs Northern Arizona Prediction:

Play: Northern Arizona -3.5. The Lumberjacks are playing so well that I’m comfortable going against the market movement.

Bethune-Cookman vs Texas Southern (-7.5), Analysis:

Neither of these teams are particularly good, but Bethune-Cookman is riding a three-game winning streak. The Wildcats’ Saturday road win at Prairie View A&M profiles as their best win in months.

I can’t say I’ve watched either team recently, but it does seem like Bethune-Cookman is playing some of its best ball of the season. Given the recent success, eight points seems like a big margin to afford the arguably better team.

The market has already started to figure this out. Texas Southern opened at -8 and is probably on its way to a consensus -7.

Bethune-Cookman vs Texas Southern Prediction:

Play: Bethune-Cookman +7.5. This is too many points to give Bethune-Cookman in a matchup like this.

College Basketball Best Bets

One of the things I look for in identifying daily college basketball betting spots is a high total that moves up another four to seven points thanks to sharp money.

I also like to look for contrarian favorites – those games that make you say, “Wait, why is that team favored?” – and ugly dogs who are getting too many points.

It’s also helpful to understand that underdogs of six or more are inherently valuable. Basketball doesn’t have key numbers quite like football does (3, 7, 10, etc) but 5.5 is about the next closest thing.

If you watch a lot of college basketball, it’s easy to imagine how a team up by just one point with 20 seconds left could end up covering a short number like -5 thanks to all the free throws at the end.

Once you have a favorite of -6 or more, though, those gaps start getting harder and harder to cover with just end-game nonsense.

That’s something to keep in mind when identifying valuable favorites or underdogs.

Free College Basketball Picks

I handicap college basketball every single day during the season, using the same marketplace principles and contrarian fundamentals that have made me a winning better in other sports like football and tennis.

I also pay close attention to the totals market. Line movement can create opportunities to bet for and against steam, depending on the circumstances. Revisit this picks page every day, and you’ll start to see what I mean.
