That success helped buoy the reputation of a middle-heavy conference in 2026. The SEC lacked a true contender this year, but its quality depth was incredible. Ken Pomeroy’s rating system places 10 different SEC teams in his top 40.
The SEC led all Division I conferences with 10 NCAA Tournament bids this year. But with No. 1 Florida crashing out in the second round, and the teams left in the second week drawing dead against superior teams, the SEC could be shut out of the NCAA Tournament’s final rounds in 2026.

The SEC didn’t have a Final Four team in 2023.
In fact, prior to 2024, the SEC’s most recent Final Four men’s basketball team was back in 2019. That year, Auburn made it to the national semifinals but lost to eventual champion Virginia.
