In the history of the NFL, only five coaches have been elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot where they were eligible.

There have been no first-ballot Hall of Fame elections since the 1990s.

Bill Belichick Falls Short of First-Ballot Hall of Fame Honor

This list of five coaches is in the news in 2026 after iconic Patriots coach Bill Belichick didn’t receive the votes needed to become a first-ballot Hall of Fame honoree.

While he will certainly be enshrined in Canton eventually, he fell short of the 80% he needed to be named a Hall of Famer on this vote.

Media reaction to Belichick’s snub has been swift and furious, with many talking heads asking what the point of a Hall of Fame is if it can’t immediately recognize a coach with six Super Bowl wins as a head coach and two as an assistant with the Giants. Generally speaking, I agree.

But to be fair, first-ballot honors have been virtually nonexistent for coaches for multiple decades now. The coaches who did get in on their first vote are historical legends of the game.

Don Shula, the last to do it, is the NFL’s all-time winningest coach and led the 1972 Dolphins to the only undefeated season ever.

Before him, there were guys like George Halas, who helped found the NFL, and Curly Lambeau, who is credited with developing and pioneering the forward pass in the early 20th century era of football.

These first-ballot coaches are near-mythic figures in football who, it could be argued, contributed more to the sport than having the good fortune of architecting the defense behind Tom Brady.

Regardless, this is largely an academic discussion, as Belichick will probably get into the Hall of Fame as early as next year.

The only distinction here is that he won’t have the additional honor of making it in on the first ballot. Is that actually important? Your mileage may vary.
