Premier League title implications increase for Sunday’s Man City-Arsenal fixture. 

Arsenal leads the league with 70 points through 32 matches. Last weekend, Mikel Arteta’s side fell 2-1 to Bournemouth, ending a four-match winning streak. 

Man City throttled Chelsea 3-0 over the weekend and currently sit on 64 points. However, City still has a game in hand on Arsenal, having played 31 fixtures.

Based on Arsenal’s penchant for trying not to lose big games and Arteta’s road tendencies, my Man City vs Arsenal prediction is the Total Under 2.5 Goals (-110). 

For Arsenal, a win here is not losing. That works perfectly for Arteta’s game plan, which is to put a ton of defenders behind the ball and play not to lose. 

Premier League observers saw this exact game script a few years ago. In April 2024, Arsenal traveled to City in contention for the league title. 

Arteta’s side possessed the ball for only 28% of the match. Only one other match over the last three years saw Arsenal accumulate less possession: last year’s trip to Man City. 

That fixture finished 2-2, but it began with a Ricardo Calafiori screamer from outside the box. Arsenal also played the entire second half down a man. 

We even saw an example of Arsenal as underdogs earlier this season. On Matchday 3, Arteta took his team to Anfield to face Liverpool. 

Arsenal lost 1-0 on an 87th-minute free kick. If not for that goal, it would have easily finished 0-0. Even with the goal, the teams combined for 0.99 expected goals. 

Plus, Arsenal generated only 0.5 xG in its last road fixture against Brighton. For the season, City’s defense represents a step up in class.

When these teams met in London, they played to a 1-1 draw. Arsenal generated only 0.7 xG while containing a strong City attack to 1.1 xG. 

City lacks a midweek match, which could provide an edge over Arsenal. However, I question the team’s ability to break down a defense content playing without the ball. 

Presumably, only one team will make a meaningful contribution to the over/under. As a result, I predict bettors will see a low-scoring contest between these clubs.
