Ipswich Town vs Man City Prediction

Based on Ipswich Town’s defensive record as an underdog and Man City’s attacking record, my Man City vs Ipswich Town prediction is Man City Over 2.5 Goals (-135).

Over 2.5 @ -130 Under 2.5 @ -108

My hesitation here is two fold. First, Manchester City faces this match off a short turnaround from Wednesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

Additionally, it’s the second match of a four-matches-in-10-days stretch for City. At some point, Enzo Maresca will likely have to give some key players a rest.

Whether the rotation comes in this fixture or next week’s UCL fixture against AEK Athens remains unknown. If it’s the latter, I like how City’s attack matches up with Ipswich Town.

Gary O’Neil’s defense performed poorly against Fulham on Matchday 6. As a home dog, the Tractor Boys conceded one goal against 1.8 expected goals.

It continued an alarming trend as underdogs. Ipswich surrendered five goals on Matchday 2 at Manchester United before allowing two goals to Liverpool as home dogs one fixture later.

At Old Trafford, Ipswich’s five concessions came against 4.6 expected goals & post-shot xG.

Purely by last year’s metrics, City qualifies as the best attack Ipswich will have faced all year. If there’s another concern, it’s that City has run extremely lucky in attack.

Maresca’s side, excluding Sunday’s trip to Anfield, has scored 13 goals off 9.7 post-shot xG.

After reaching 5.2 psxG in the first two matches, City reached 1.4 against Coventry and 2.1 vs Sunderland. The former performance against a promoted team leaves room for hesitation.

Most of City’s regression is primed to come away from home. At the Etihad, they’ve averaged 2.1 xG & post-shot xG. Assuming a full-strength lineup, I predict the hosts clear a lofty line.
