FIFA announced a record-breaking prize money payout for the 2026 World Cup.

Participants will compete in the tournament – hosted jointly by the US, Canada and Mexico – for a record $727 million. It marks a 50% increase from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Most of the prize money pool is distributed to nations based on finishing position. Of the $727 million, $655 gets distributed based on where countries finish in the tournament.

FIFA sets aside another $72 million for preparation costs. Each country earns $1.5 million to help prepare for the tournament.

World Cup Prize Money by Finishing Position

The winner of the 2026 World Cup is set to take home $50 million in prize money, with the runner-up receiving $33 million.

Every nation that reaches the semifinals takes home at least $27 million in prizes plus the $1.5 million preparation share.

The biggest jump in prize money occurs after the quarterfinals. Teams eliminated in that round win $19 million in prizes vs. $27 million for fourth place.

Below is the prize money breakdown in USD based on finishing position.
