Group E World Cup 2026 Prediction

Based on their recent ability to avoid defeat and Germany’s inconsistent defensive record, I predict Ecuador (+350) wins Group E.

Chances are Germany wins this group, as the odds indicate. However, my belief is that Germany and Ecuador are closer in quality than the odds suggest.

Under Sebastian Beccacece, Ecuador posted an impressive run of results. After a 1-0 opening defeat against Brazil, Beccaceca’s side reeled off 17 straight results.

I’m obligated to mention that wins rarely happened in that unbeaten streak. During that 17-match unbeaten run, Ecuador won six matches and drew 13.

But this is also a team that, over that 18-match run, never surrendered multiple goals. Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie and Pervis Estupinan anchor the defense.

Perhaps most impressively, Ecuador achieved that defensive feat against decent opposition.

Over the 18-match run, the nation played 10 matches against countries ranked 17th or better in the current FIFA rankings.

By comparison, Germany’s defense renders them a vulnerable favorite.

Japan and Costa Rica showed that at the 2022 World Cup. Both teams cleared 1.5 goals against Germany, managed by Hansi Flick.

A change to Julian Nagelsmann lacked improvement. Switzerland scored three times in a recent friendly with Germany, losing outright at Slovakia in qualifying.

My presumption is the Ecuadorian defense will frustrate a possession-heavy Germany attack.

The defensive record – paired with Germany’s inconsistencies – renders Ecuador a live underdog. As a result, it’s my belief Ecuador could steal the group more than 22.2% of the time.
