Phillies vs. Braves Prediction for Game 1 NL Wild Card

  • Braves series moneyline (-125)

Before Game 1 of the NL Wild Card, I’m interested in backing the Braves to win the series. I like the moneyline value, or the price on them to win Game 1 and the series, since both are correlated.

Chris Sale will take the mound on Tuesday, giving the No. 3 Braves a serious advantage to start this best-of-three series. Sale continues to defy Father Time, posting a 14-9 record with a 2.16 ERA in his age-37 season. Sale whiffed 200 batters in 162 2/3 innings of work.

Sale made four starts against the Phillies this season, winning three while recording a 2.08 ERA with 29 strikeouts across 26 frames. The Braves handled the Phillies all year, winning nine of their 13 head-to-head meetings on their way to a NL East title.

The Phillies, meanwhile, must figure out who can pitch after their starters were pushed to the final day of the regular season. Zack Wheeler had to start the finale to notch a postseason berth for Philadelphia.

Cristopher Sánchez won’t be on full rest until Wednesday, while Jesús Luzardo (Game 1 opener) recently returned from the injured list. To make matters worse, Philadelphia’s bullpen has ranked last with a 5.79 ERA in September.

All signs point toward the Braves winning this series, especially if they can set the tone in Game 1.

Prediction: Braves to win the series (-125)
