White Sox vs. Astros Prediction: Game 1 AL Wild Card Preview

World Series Betting Promos

The Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros will meet in Game 1 of the 2026 AL Wild Card at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Daikin Park in Houston on Peacock.

Read on for my White Sox vs. Astros prediction based on the latest MLB odds:

White Sox vs. Astros Prediction for Game 1 AL Wild Card

  • Under 8.5 (-122)

I like the under on the day’s highest total for my White Sox vs. Astros prediction. Their full-game total is one or two runs higher than every other game.

On paper, it makes sense that this game features the highest total. The White Sox and Astros have the most suspect rotations among all playoff teams. Chicago’s rotation ranked 26th with a 4.60 ERA, while Houston finished 27th with a 4.81 ERA.

However, I’m not as concerned about that in a best-of-three series. Both teams can be aggressive with their bullpen usage, taking advantage of specific matchups. The White Sox’s bullpen ranked eighth with a 3.70 ERA this year. The Astros’ unit wasn’t as good in the regular season, but they have some playoff experience.

Speaking of which, I’m a bit concerned by the White Sox’s inexperience. Many of their key young players will be getting their first taste of the postseason. Some have already demonstrated signs of fading down the stretch.

Colson Montgomery has wRC+ of 54 since Aug. 1, hitting .155 with a .249 on-base percentage. Munetaka Murakami got off to a hot start as a power hitter, but he’s hitting .167 with six home runs in 25 games this month.

The Astros, meanwhile, have the best hitter in the AL with Yordan Alvarez leading the way. But what happens if they have to manufacture runs if the White Sox pitch around him? Houston ranked last in the majors in Baseball Savant’s base-running metric.

I see multiple paths to an under on a high total.

Prediction: Under 8.5 (-122)
