- The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters is the first big clay tournament of the year.
- The total prize purse for the 2026 Monte-Carlo Open is more than $7 million.
Europe’s clay season is one of the highlights of the tennis calendar. On the men’s tour, it begins in earnest in early April with the Monte-Carlo Masters – the first of several ATP 1000 events held in southern Europe during the Mediterranean spring.
This year, all eyes will be on Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 1 clay tennis player in the world. Alcaraz completed his career slam with a championship in Melbourne in January, but he hasn’t played well since. That includes unexpectedly early losses at two key American tournaments in March: Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
Because it’s clay season, the tennis betting market will surely still favor Alcaraz to advance. He won several of these major tournaments last spring, including Monte-Carlo, and will be a popular betting target to win most of his matches again this year.Â
Still, it’s worth keeping a close eye on Alcaraz’s form in the run-up to Roland Garros next month. If he’s still not at the top of his game in late May, there will be an opening for other players – starting with chief ATP rival Jannik Sinner – to crack the Alcaraz monopoly on clay championships and prize money.
And speaking of the latter, Monte-Carlo offers a sizable prize purse in 2026: €6,309,095, or roughly $7.3 million.
