The Lakers have won 50 games in back-to-back seasons, but the NBA odds market clearly expects them to take a step back. And I can’t help but agree, as I like the under on 46.5 wins.
It’s officially time for a new era in Los Angeles. LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency, leaving the Lakers after an eight-year stint that resulted in one championship and two trips to the Western Conference finals.
Typically, teams don’t perform well in the first year without James. The Cleveland Cavaliers saw a 42-win decrease the first time James left them and a 31-victory drop the second time around. The Miami Heat also won 17 fewer games in their first season without James.
Luka Dončić should help the Lakers avoid a serious drop-off, but the pressure is now on him and Austin Reaves to lead this team. The Lakers also overhauled their roster around that duo, bringing in Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Los Angeles eventually figures out a winning formula with this core, but there could be some growing pains at first. It also doesn’t help that there are as many easy wins in the NBA under this new lottery system that discourages tanking.
The Lakers went 29-4 against teams below .500 last year, which helped cover up some of their flaws. Their expected record was 45-37, and that’s more in line with what I expect from the Lakers this season.
