College basketball fans are in for a treat on Saturday.

As part of a late-season showcase sponsored by Edward Jones Capital, title favorite Michigan will step out of Big Ten conference play for a high-profile showdown with Duke.

The No. 1 vs. No. 3 showdown, which carries all the potential of a national championship game preview, could be the most-watched game of the season.

Duke vs. Michigan Preview

Saturday evening’s nonconference tilt between Duke and Michigan is almost definitely the most anticipated game of the season. Both Duke and Michigan rank in the top 10 nationally in both KenPom-adjusted offensive efficiency and adjusted defensive efficiency – classic signs of true national title contenders.

In the context of college basketball odds, that means the winning team will likely wake up on Sunday morning as the national championship favorite.

Duke will almost certainly have the best player on the court. Forward Cameron Boozer averages a 23/10 double-double and shoots 58% from the floor – numbers that have made him a prohibitive favorite in Player of the Year markets like BetMGM’s John Wooden Award odds.

Boozer should dominate the game, especially considering Michigan is a non-conference opponent that won’t have spent weeks preparing for this game or discussing Duke with conference peers.

Michigan doesn’t have Boozer, but it does have a great forward of its own in Yaxel Lendeborg. Generally, Michigan has greater balance among its starting five, making it a better overall team.

Both teams play great team defense – No. 1 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency despite a very fast tempo of play – forcing many opponents to hoist bad threes as the clock is winding down.

This game may be an atypical departure from that defense. For one thing, both teams pass and assist at a high rate, suggesting this could be a game where good offense beats good defense.

For another, both teams are all but assured No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament at this point, so they may be a little hesitant to throw all their tricks out onto the floor in a game that could get a rematch six weeks from now.

For me, this kind of game script suggests a clear betting angle.

Duke vs. Michigan Prediction

I am predicting an Over 148.5 in Saturday’s game between Duke and Michigan.

Despite the excellent defensive reputations of both teams, I think Saturday’s showcase game in Washington, D.C. will be a game where offense is the trump card.

I’d also consider a play on the Duke moneyline, since Boozer may be the most dominant single player in this game. With the price north of +140, it’s a dart worth throwing.

Prediction: Over 148.5; Lean Duke +135
