Brock Purdy: Mr. Irrelevant Becomes Anything But

When it comes to movement in the NFL odds market, nothing from Week 13 shifted the long-term landscape in the NFL quite like the quarterback news out of San Francisco.

The 49ers made their third major quarterback change of the season, with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy eventually playing out the remainder of the regular season in San Francisco after separate injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Prior to the NFC Championship game on January 29, the 49ers were 8-0 (7-1 ATS) in games in which Purdy has played quarterback, winning by an average margin of 16 points.

Brock Purdy was selected with the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, which comes with the ignominious title of Mr. Irrelevant.

Brock Purdy suffered a complete tear of the UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) in his throwing elbow. He will need surgery to repair the ligament this offseason.

As keen NFL observers may already know, Brock Purdy was injured early in San Francisco’s NFC Championship game against Philadelphia. Purdy did eventually re-enter the game to play quarterback, but only because the 49ers literally ran out of quarterbacks.

A torn UCL is likely to sideline Purdy for about six months, which means he could be ready to play by training camp.

By the end of the regular season, though, the 49ers came all the way back down to +500, thanks to Purdy’s sharp play at the helm of San Francisco’s offense.

Following the divisional round, the 49ers were down to +320 to win the Super Bowl.

Jimmy Garoppolo Injury

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in the 49ers’ Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins, paving the way for rookie Brock Purdy to assume control of the 49ers’ offense. 

Trey Lance Remains Out

Jimmy Garoppolo’s broken foot wasn’t the first serious quarterback injury that San Francisco fans have witnessed this year. Trey Lance fractured his ankle in Week 2 and underwent season-ending surgery to repair it.
