The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business, so there’s no need to belabor the point at head coach. If you’re bad, you’re bad. 

Sometimes, it takes a few years for an organization to determine whether the coach is a problem. In a sport with so many complexities, that makes sense.

But occasionally, it’s obvious that a coach just doesn’t have it. It’s rare, but not unprecedented, to get fired after a single year of work as an NFL head coach.

Here is the ignominious list of one-and-done NFL coaches, dating all the way back to the NFL’s 1970 merger.
