An NFL salary cap hit is how much money from players’ contracts is counted toward a salary cap in that particular year.

For example, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has a cap hit of about $55 million in 2023, the most for any player in the NFL. He signed a five-year, $230 million deal with the Browns, and Watson’s contract will have a cap hit of about $55 million each of the next four seasons.

Because his contract is fully guaranteed, his deal would have a dead cap value of $220 million in 2023.
