For those new to soccer betting odds, the vast array of markets can easily cause some confusion.

One such market is double chance, which combines multiple outcomes from a match into a singular wager.

However, to ensure multiple outcomes in a match – soccer uses a three-way moneyline – bettors sometimes have to pay a premium depending on the odds.

Double Chance Bet Example

Let’s take the game between Manchester City and Liverpool on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, as an example.

Here’s how the odds shape up on the three-way moneyline:

  • Manchester City to Win: -155
  • Liverpool to Win: +360
  • Manchester City & Liverpool to Draw: +320

These three markets are the basis for double chance. In that market, bettors receive two options from the three aforementioned moneylines.

Here’s how that looks in practice:

  • Manchester City to Win OR Tie: -550
  • Tie OR Liverpool to Win: +120
  • Manchester City to Win OR Liverpool to Win: -450

Bettors cash the first market if Manchester City avoids defeat. However, they’ll need to lay $550 to win $100.

Regarding the second market – Liverpool to win OR Tie – that’s the exact same bet as taking Liverpool’s goal line (+0.5).

In this example, bettors win $120 for every $100 risked if Liverpool can win the match or produce a draw.

In the final market, bettors need the match to end with either side winning.

As the odds close together, bettors can take one of these markets with decreased juice.

On Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, Newcastle United hosts Chelsea.

Here’s how the three-way moneyline and double chance odds differ from the first match

Three Way Moneyline

  • Newcastle United to Win: +145 ($100 wins $145)
  • Chelsea to Win: +180 ($100 wins $180)
  • Newcastle United & Chelsea to Draw: +250 ($100 wins $250)

Double Chance Moneylines

  • Newcastle United to Win OR Tie: -250 ($250 wins $100)
  • Tie OR Chelsea to Win: -190 ($190 wins $100)
  • Newcastle United to Win OR Chelsea to Win: -350 ($350 wins $100)
