How to Bet on Hockey
Let’s take a matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres as an example.
Point Spreads: The Pittsburgh Penguins are -1.5 (-110) over the Buffalo Sabres, who are +1.5 (-110). If you take the Penguins -1.5, they have to win by two or more goals for your bet to win. If you take the Sabres +1.5, they can lose by one goal or win the game for your bet to be a winner.
Moneyline: For the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres game, the moneylines are set at Pittsburgh Penguins -315 and Buffalo Sabres: +250. Whoever has the negative odds is the favorite, and the higher the number after the negative sign, the bigger the favorite they are. A $315 winning bet on Pittsburgh would win you $100 (plus your original wager money back). A $100 bet on the Sabres would win you $250 (plus your original wager money back).
Over/under: Betting the over/under in hockey is exhilarating because every goal is massive, and the sport is low-scoring compared to football or basketball. Let’s say the Sabres vs. Penguins game has an over/under at 5.5. If you bet the under, you need the combined goals to be five or less to win. If you bet the over, you need the combined goals to be six or more to win.
