Curt Cignetti took the long way to the top of the coaching mountain. As the son of a coach, and an early member of Nick Saban’s Alabama staff, Cignetti had a lot of opportunity to learn what worked (and what didn’t) throughout his early years in the sport.

But instead of jumping at the first jobs that presented themselves, Cignetti toiled in relative obscurity.

By the time he resurrected Indiana football odds in 2024, he had learned a lot of coaching lessons.

He’d also won a lot of football games. (Perhaps you got here by Googling him.)

Curt Cignetti Career: Other Teams Coached

Before becoming a Div. II head coach at IUP, Cignetti famously worked as the recruiting coordinator for Nick Saban at Alabama. He first took that job in 2007 until leaving to coach IUP in 2011. He played a major role in recruiting and developing some of the early stars of Saban’s Alabama dynasty, including Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram II.

Before that, Cignetti mostly stayed close to home. He was born in Pittsburgh and played college football at West Virginia, where his father Frank was the head coach. (Frank Sr. also coached at IUP for 20 years, leaving just six seasons before his son would take over.)

Early in his career, Curt Cignetti worked as an assistant at Pittsburgh (GA, 1983-84), Davidson (QB/WR, 1985), Rice (QB, 1986-88), Temple (QB, 1989-92), Pittsburgh again (QB/TE, 1993-99), and NC State (QB/TE/RC, 2000-06).

Curt Cignetti Age

Curt Cignetti is 64 years old.

Born on June 2, 1961, he’s one of the oldest head coaches in college football, which many people may not realize because of his high energy and penchant for trash talk.
