One year after the Mavericks’ win total was my favorite under in the market, their over stands out as one of the best values.
The hype around Dallas last preseason got out of control. TV personalities actually debated whether the Mavs were championship contenders when Kyrie Irving returned to the lineup.
Of course, Irving never returned from injury last season, something I projected when I took the under on 41.5 wins. Dallas finished 25-56, including a 5-18 stretch to close out the campaign.
The Mavs won’t have any tanking risk this season, as they owe their first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets. Plus, Irving will really be healthy after a year off. Cooper Flagg will build off a Rookie of the Year campaign. And Dallas won’t be the most injured Western Conference team for the second year in a row.
Basically, the market has overreacted to a tumultuous season by dropping the Mavs’ win total by seven games. This team could compete for a playoff spot if things break right.
First-year head coach Dusty May, who led Michigan to the national championship before making the leap to the NBA, could have an immediate impact. The Mavs should also have a healthy center rotation this time around between Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and Moussa Cisse.
There are many reasons to believe the Mavericks are underrated in a West that isn’t nearly as deep as it has been in recent seasons.
