Kirk Cousins remains one of the most interesting free agents of the modern NFL. His willingness to leave the Redskins and test free agency in 2016 – and again in 2017, and again in 2018 – gives NFL fans one of the only true data points we have about the value of a good signal-caller on the open market.

In March 2022, Cousins signed a one-year contract extension with the Vikings that governed the 2023 season. With the season now over in Minnesota and Cousins rehabbing an Achilles injury, the soon-to-be 36-year-old is once again preparing to enter the open market.

Casual observers might think the Achilles injury will limit Cousins’ earning potential. In reality, Cousins’ strong performance and continued growth at quarterback will likely net him big money on a short deal.

Kirk Cousins Contract

In 2023, Kirk Cousins played on a one-year contract extension worth $35 million.

Cousins’ contract, which was originally signed in March 2018 and extended twice, was fully guaranteed and included a no-trade clause.

Kirk Cousins Salary

In 2023, Kirk Cousins’ base salary was $10 million. The terms initially called for a $20 million roster bonus; Cousins and the Vikings converted that money into signing bonus in March 2023 to clear $16 million in cap room.
