College Football Betting FAQs
How to bet on college football
There are so many different ways to bet on college football, but these are the most likely that you will encounter:
- Moneyline — a straight-up bet on who you think will win the game.
- Total or over/under — bet on whether you think the total points will be above or below the number given by the sportsbook.
- Point spread — bet on how much you think a team will win or lose by. The underdog is given an advantage to even the betting field. The favorite team is given a handicap, which means that they need to win by a certain number of points to be declared winners for those that bet on them. You bet on whichever team to cover the spread: if you bet on the underdog team, they must either win the game outright or not lose by a certain number of points; if you bet on the favorites, then they have to win the game by a set number of points. For example, if Alabama is the stronger team and you bet on them to cover a 3-point spread, then they must win by at least 4 points.
- Props bets — this is when you bet on a single aspect in the game. Examples include: Player X will make a 50-yard run, Player Y will score a touchdown, Player Z will drop a pass, etc.
- Futures bets — betting on which team will win a conference at the end of the season, etc.
- Parlay bets — wagering on multiple outcomes with a singular bet. If all outcomes are chosen correctly, then you win the bet.

How to read college football betting lines
When betting on college football, you’ll usually see a table similar to the one below. On the left is the game details such as time and date, then you’ll see the rotation numbers and team names. The next couple of columns will show the odds for each team according to the type of bet you place, for example:
Date/Time |
Rotation |
Team |
Point Spread |
Moneyline |
Total |
Nov 3rd |
109 |
Ohio State |
-7.5 |
-360 |
41 |
7:00 |
110 |
Wisconsin |
+7.5 |
+280 |
41 |
These can vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, but for the sake of this example, here’s how you would read them:
- Points spread: In this case, Ohio State is playing at home as favorites and they get a -7.5 handicap. This means that Ohio State must win by 8 or more to win the game.
- Moneyline: The favorite team, Ohio, is listed with a - and a number, in this case, -360. This means that you must bet at least $360 dollars to win $100. If you bet on the underdog, which has a plus sign and a number (+280), this means you’ll win $280 off a $100 bet.
- Total: This is a simple over/under bet. If Ohio were to score 24 and Wisconsin were to score 20, the total would be 44, which is above the bookmakers total, and if you had bet on the over, then you’d win and vice versa.
