Dodgers vs. Braves Prediction for Game 3 NLDS
- Chris Sale over 17.5 outs
Ahead of Game 3 of the NLDS, I’m interested in backing Braves ace Chris Sale. The over on his outs prop is the best angle.
Much was made about how the Braves handled their pitching staff to start this series. Because Walt Weiss asked Sale to record the final four outs of the NL Wild Card series, the 37-year-old lefty wasn’t available to pitch in Game 2. As a result, Sale is unlikely to be available in Game 5 if the series lasts that long.
Instead of getting two potential starts from their best pitcher in this NLDS, the Braves now must cash in on Sale’s lone appearance in Game 3. Fortunately for them, it could be a pivotal matchup. Oddsmakers give the Braves and Dodgers the same odds of winning on Tuesday.
Given that this will be Sale’s lone showing in this series, I expect him to record as many outs as possible. It also helps that it’s been a full week since his last start in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card, when he pitched 6 1/3 innings.
The Braves were careful with Sale all year, asking him to record 19-plus outs just eight times. He started on five or more days of rest in all but two of his 27 regular-season starts, posting a 2.16 ERA with 200 strikeouts in 162 2/3 innings.
Now it’s time for the Braves to unleash their best player. Sale has cleared 18.5 outs in three of his past five starts, including a complete-game shutout against the Dodgers on Aug. 27.
The Braves may need another special performance from Sale to take a series lead over the defending champions.
Prediction: Chris Sale over 17.5 outs
