LeBron James Next Team Prediction: Cavs, Lakers Among Top Suitors

For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is a free agent and can play anywhere he wants. That’s when James opted out of his final year with the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

After eight seasons in Los Angeles, James now has a decision to make about his basketball career:

  • Retire
  • Stay with the Lakers
  • Test free agency

So, which one will James choose?

LeBron James Next Team Odds & Favorites

The BetMGM online sportsbook doesn’t have a market for James’ next team, which makes sense because it’s unclear what he will do this summer. With multiple options, including retirement on the table, it would be difficult to set fair odds on anything for James.

There is an argument that James has never faced this kind of decision in his 23-year career. James, who typically signs short-term deals with opt-outs, has always had some sort of leverage and control over his basketball future.

But this summer won’t be like that. The Lakers can decide to move on to use their cap space for another player, leaving James to test free agency. There is no guarantee that he will get the contract he’s used to signing.

According to Steph Noh’s NBA salary model, James had a projected value of $29.9 million during the 2025-26 season while actually making $52.6 million. He’s projected to have a value of $23.3 million in 2026-27.

If James is realistic about his current on-court value, he likely has several options in free agency. But if his goal is to make as much money as possible or be closer to home, it’s unclear how many teams would be in the market.

For now, I’d rank these teams as the favorites to land James:

  • Cavaliers
  • Lakers
  • Warriors
  • Knicks
  • Clippers

LeBron James Next Team Prediction

I’m predicting that James will return to Cleveland to end his career where it started. It just makes too much sense on paper.

The Cavaliers haven’t won the Eastern Conference since James left them eight years ago, with this year’s trip to the conference finals being the closest they’ve gotten over that span.

Assuming the Knicks knock them off, the Cavs will be looking to get over the hump and will have few options to improve an expensive roster.

James could stay in Los Angeles to be close to his family and enjoy the warm weather, but I find it difficult to believe he’s comfortable with being the third option behind Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. As James proved in a Round 1 win over the Houston Rockets, he can still deliver as one of the top options in the playoffs.

Cleveland is actually missing someone like James. The Cavs are led by Donovan Mitchell, but they haven’t found him a reliable sidekick in the postseason. This year’s trade of Darius Garland for James Harden proved how desperate they are to solve that problem.

In terms of how it works, a lot of this will depend on how much James commands in free agency. But if he’s comfortable with taking a pay cut for a retirement tour with his home team, there is a path to slotting James in Cleveland’s lineup.

It’s certainly the best outcome for both James and the Cavs.
