Panthers vs Eagles Prediction

Based on Philadelphia’s improving pass defense and the Panthers’ misleading offensive metrics, my Panthers vs Eagles prediction is the Panthers Under 20.5 Points (-118).

Over 20.5 @ -115 Under 20.5 @ -102

Vic Fangio’s defense is starting to improve, especially against the pass. Continued success will decide how the Eagles defense performs on Sunday against a Panthers team off a bye.

In the first three weeks of the season, the Eagles failed consistently against the pass. Washington, Tennessee and Chicago averaged a 23% pass offense DVOA rating.

Then the Eagles faced strong Rams and Jaguars aerial attacks. Turnovers helped the Eagles limit the Rams to 24 points while the Jaguars offense scored only 19 in London.

A lot of red zone inefficiency from the Jaguars contributed to that total. Still, the Eagles averaged a -8.3% pass defense DVOA rating.

Purely from a season-long standpoint, the Panthers’ passing game looks like a nightmare matchup for Philadelphia.

Dave Canales’ offense ranks ninth in pass offense DVOA and has cleared this line in three of its first four games.

My operating assumption is that opponent quality is making the Panthers offense look better than its actual ceiling.

Carolina scored 37 against Chicago, 34 against Atlanta and 32 against Detroit. When they went to Cleveland, the Panthers scored a dismal 18 points.

In those three wins, Carolina averaged a 46.2% pass-offense DVOA rating. At Cleveland, it plummeted to a -21.1% pass rating.

Is two weeks of preparing for a team off an international game enough to overcome the matchup? Perhaps.

But I’m alarmed that, as of Wednesday, 82% of bets are backing over 40.5 points. The Panthers offense is good, but it isn’t that good. Accordingly, I predict they stay under this benchmark.
