Off its first loss of the season, the Eagles travel to New York for a division matchup against the Giants. 

Philadelphia blew a big lead late in the second half. Against the Broncos, the Eagles fell 21-17, failing to cover the spread as a 4.5-point home favorite. 

The Giants struggled in Jaxson Dart’s second career start. As short road underdogs against the Saints, Brian Daboll’s team fell to 1-4 in a 26-14 road loss.

Oddsmakers released the Giants’ team total for Thursday’s game. Against expectations, the Giants Team Total line is set at 16.5 points. 

It slightly worries me that the line sits beneath a key number. However, the Giants have cleared this number only twice this season. 

In three other games: six, nine and 14 points. If the Giants clear this benchmark, it’s not by a big margin. That helps quell some concern about the line. 

New York failed to clear this number in both games against the Eagles last season. On short rest, I predict a similar result for the Giants offense. 

Sunder, October 5

Based on the Eagles’ defensive prowess against offenses superior to the Giants, my Giants vs Eagles prediction is the Giants Team Total Under 16.5 Points (-115). 

The implied team total odds vs. the over/under suggest bettors should expect a 17.5 team total for New York. If it opens beneath that number, I carry a smaller interest. 

Philadelphia has kept only one opponent under that figure this season. However, it has come against the hardest set of opposing offenses through five games, per ftnfantasy.com. 

Ill-timed penalties cost Philadelphia against the Broncos. Entering the fourth quarter, the Eagles defense surrendered only three points. 

Now the defense receives a massive reprieve against a Malik Nabers-less Giants offense. Excluding Week 5, the Giants rank 27th in offensive DVOA. 

Without Nabers, New York managed only 14 points against the Saints. Five turnovers assisted that failure for the Giants, who have stayed under this number in three of five this season. 

Plus, the Eagles defense dominated the Giants last season. New York managed only three points at home last year and scored 13 in Philadelphia. 

For Dart, I worry about his ability to exploit Philadelphia’s defense on short rest. The Giants cleared this number against the Chargers, but the team scored 10 points off turnovers. 

This Eagles offense has turned the ball over once this year. 

Assuming that continues, New York won’t receive short fields against a tested defense. Based on those factors, I predict New York stays under 17.5 points.
