Panthers vs Packers Prediction
Based on the Panthers’ critical cornerback injuries and volatile defensive metrics, my Packers vs Panthers prediction is the Packers Over 25.5 Points.
Green Bay arrives at this contest possessing improved offensive metrics. Excluding a Week 7 trip to Detroit, Matt LaFleur’s passing game has taken a massive step forward in recent weeks.
In their first three games – at Minnesota, at New York, vs. Atlanta – the Packers recorded a pass offense DVOA ceiling of 8.2%.
Over the next three games, the offense generated a 30% pass offense DVOA rating twice. The lone shortcoming came against Dallas (-10.7%), who possessed an improved secondary.
What’s mystifying about the Packers is their red zone inefficiency this season. Including the Detroit game, Green Bay notched 26 red zone opportunities.
It includes three red zone opportunities in every game and four in all but two of those games.
At Tampa Bay, the offense scored 17 points, but it fumbled at the Bucs’ three-yard line. Then the unit pummeled a bad Bears defense for 31 points at Lambeau with four red zone chances.
Against Dallas, Green Bay notched four red zone chances with two drops in the end zone. A second-and-1 from the Dallas one-yard line ended in a field goal.
Now the offense gets an extremely volatile Panthers defense. Excluding Carolina’s Week 7 performance against Tampa Bay, the defense ranks 18th in DVOA vs. 31st in variance.
Against Chicago and Detroit, the defense allowed four red zone chances per game to both teams. Detroit, in an underperformance of their red zone chances, still scored 31.
The defense will also miss Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson against this Packers passing game. More concerning is how Carolina pressures Jordan Love if Jaelen Phillips misses the game.
It leaves me to predict the Packers will clear this line against a Carolina defense traveling on short rest.
