In a league with no salary cap, there’s no telling what a singular talent like Patrick Mahomes would make. It might be over $100 million per year.
In a capped league, though, Mahomes and the Kansas City front office have a delicate dance to manage.Â
On the one hand, both parties want Mahomes to be appropriately paid for his work, which includes being the face of one of the most popular teams in the league.
On the other hand, a maximalist approach to his salary degrades the front office’s ability to build a competitive team. And while the Chiefs’ odds aren’t going to be near the bottom of the NFL any time soon, Kansas City’s inability to build effective depth at positions like receiver and tackle is directly tied to a handful of huge salaries.Â
As is his usual custom, in February Mahomes agreed to restructure his contract, converting tens of millions in 2026 compensation into a signing bonus.Â
The conversion of $44.05 million, plus $10.4 million in roster bonuses, created more than $43 million in new cap space for Kansas City. Whether that’s enough purchasing power to revive the flagging roster is another matter. Â
Patrick Mahomes Contract
Patrick Mahomes is technically under contract with Kansas City through 2031 on a maximalist deal worth $450 million.
That said, Mahomes’ restructured deal effectively ends his current status with the Chiefs after 2026, as both parties agree to revisit the contract.
Mahomes has a no-trade clause.
Patrick Mahomes Salary
Patrick Mahomes will earn $56.75 million from his contract with the Chiefs in 2026.
The vast majority of that ($54.45 million) is restructured salary converted into a signing bonus to provide the team additional cap mobility.
Mahomes will now earn $1.3 million in base salary and $1 million as a workout bonus.Â
Over the course of his contract, Mahomes’ average annual salary is $45 million.
