  • Mexico is predicted to be a 1.5-goal favorite against South Africa.
  • Mexico has won five of its last six World Cup matches at Estadio Banorte.
  • My Mexico vs South Africa prediction is the Total Under 2.5 Goals (-130).

Mexico opens the 2026 World Cup on home soil against South Africa.

El Tri begins the tournament as a short favorite to win Group A. Javier Aguirre’s side exited in the group stage four years ago, ending a seven-tournament stretch reaching the round of 16.

South Africa projects as the last-place finisher in Group A if odds hold. The African nation last qualified for the World Cup as hosts in 2010, exiting in the group stage.

South Africa vs Mexico Prediction

Based on Mexico’s lack of attacking prowess beyond Raul Jimenez and its strong defensive record against good teams, my Mexico vs South Africa prediction is Under 2.5 Goals (-130).

Outside Raul Jimenez, the Mexico attack lacks many threats. One-off successes do exist – a 4-0 win over non-tournament team Iceland comes to mind – but it remains a pragmatic attack.

As recently as last year’s Gold Cup, Mexico struggled playing with the ball. Aguirre’s side held 70% possession against Costa Rica, notching only 1.45 expected goals.

Even more concerning, Mexico created only 0.3 post-shot expected goals in that match, a 0-0 draw.

Matches against Suriname, Saudi Arabia and Honduras – all inferior sides – finished under 2.5 goals as well. Those three fixtures, along with Costa Rica, averaged only 1.58 expected goals.

Defensively, Mexico demonstrated competency with performances against Portugal and Belgium.

Aguirre’s defense surrendered only two big scoring chances in friendlies against the UEFA powerhouses.

I don’t need to tell anyone that South Africa lacks the competency of those attacks. At the same time, the defense produced decent results at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt scored its only goal off a penalty before playing the second half down a man. A decent Cameroon attack generated only 1.4 expected goals.

For South Africa, the goal here is to avoid defeat and preserve its knockout chances. Accordingly, you’ll likely see a very defensive approach as a sizable underdog.

Those factors, along with Mexico’s attacking struggles, lead me to expect a low-scoring opening match.
