Bill Self signed a lifetime contract as Kansas head coach on March 31, 2021, nine days after the end of the Jayhawks’ 2020-21 season.
Bill Self’s Lifetime Contract
Self’s lifetime contract consists of rolling five-year terms. One additional year is added annually on the contract’s effective date (April 1, 2021).
He signed the deal after the conclusion of his 18th season as Jayhawks’ head coach.
Bill Self’s Salary
Bill Self’s annual base salary is only $225,000, though with other guaranteed compensation, his total annual salary is $5,725,000. He’s one of the highest-paid college basketball coaches for the 2022-23 season.
- Base Salary: $225,000
- Multimedia Activities: $2,750,000
- Educational, PR, Promotional Duties: $1,400,000
- NIL License Royalty Payment: $1,350,000
He also has a life insurance policy in the amount of $4 million, an allotment of $20,000 per month for his family’s travel to road games, use of a suite at football games, and two country club memberships (Alvamar Country Club and Lawrence Golf Club).
Bill Self’s Bonuses & Incentives
Self’s contract has seven potential incentive payments:
- Big 12 Regular-Season Champion: $50,000
- Big 12 Tournament Champion: $25,000
- AP Coach of the Year: $100,000
- NCAA Tournament Appearance: $50,000
- Sweet 16 Appearance: $100,000
- Final Four Appearance: $150,000
- National Champion: $200,000
The amounts “shall be paid out accumulatively,” i.e., the Final Four incentive wouldn’t override and eliminate the NCAA Tournament appearance and Sweet 16 appearance incentives.
