  • The AP poll is released every Monday.
  • Unlike college football, the poll results have virtually no effect on the sport.
  • College basketball teams ranked in the top 25 often have bad ATS marks.

A new college basketball season is well underway at this point, which means basketball hardos are deep in the weeds on NET Rankings, non-conference wins and NCAA basketball championship odds.

In other words, it’s a beautiful time to be a hoops fan.

If you’re still learning the basics of college basketball, though, you may be wondering where to start. One good place is the weekly turnover of the Associated Press (AP) college basketball poll, which provides the college basketball public square with a baseline of who some of the top teams are at any given moment.

When Do College Basketball Rankings Come Out?

The AP poll releases new college basketball rankings every Monday, often early in the afternoon for those on east coast time.

College Basketball Rankings

Unlike college football, the college basketball poll has virtually no impact on the postseason of the sport. That’s because 68 teams are ultimately included in the Division I postseason tournament, with on-court results dictating seeding (if not inclusion) for every team.

When it comes to college basketball odds, it can actually be profitable to bet against teams ranked in the AP top 25, as I’ll show you a little later. The college basketball betting market often overvalues ranked teams, which creates point spread value on the underdogs.

College Basketball AP Top 25: Biggest Risers This Week

Duke was the AP Poll’s biggest winner during conference tournament week, jumping up nine spots after a convincing run through the ACC tournament.

Undefeated College Basketball Teams

With UConn, New Mexico and Purdue all losing, there are no more remaining undefeated teams in college basketball.
