After a shocking end to the 2025 season, Todd Bowles’ Bucs continued to struggle early in 2026.
Tampa Bay dropped to 0-4 following a narrow loss to Green Bay in Week 4. Dating back to last season, the Buccaneers posted a 2-11 record over their last 13 games.
The performances have raised questions about Todd Bowles’ future with the team. Bowles took over the team in 2022 and made the playoffs all but one season.
Who would prove a natural replacement? Here’s a look at two head coaching candidates for the Buccaneers.
NFL Hot Seat: 2 Potential Replacements for Todd Bowles
Grant Udinski, Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator
Udinski, along with Jags head coach Liam Coen, have led an offensive resurgence since last year.
Jacksonville finished the season 14th in offensive DVOA last year. Through four games this year, the Jaguars rank fourth.
Perhaps most impressively, Jacksonville trails only the 49ers and Ravens in pass offense DVOA. It could lend itself to the Bucs, given Tampa Bay’s weapons at wide receiver.
At only 30 years old, Udinski offers long-term coaching viability. While he would instantly become the youngest head coach in the NFL, his offensive acumen could help the Bucs.
Klay Kubiak, San Francisco 49ers Offensive Coordinator
Kubai surrenders play-calling duties to Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. However, implementing a Shanahan-like system could upgrade the Bucs offense.
Despite injury issues, San Francisco consistently ranked amongst the best offenses in the NFL.
In 2025, the 49ers ranked second in offensive DVOA. Through four 2026 games, the Niners lead the NFL in the category. It includes a first-place ranking in pass offense DVOA.
A lot of similarities exist between the Buccaneers and 49ers, too. Both possess an elite offensive tackle, above-average lines and strong skill players.
San Francisco deploys a superior skill group at full strength. However, Kubiak has shown he can overcome team injuries and keep the offense performing well.
Kubiak also comes from a strong NFL lineage. Father Gary Kubiak won a Super Bowl with the Broncos and two more as an offensive coordinator.
Brother Klint Kubiak won a Super Bowl with Seattle and has led the Raiders to a strong start as head coach.
