I worry a lot about Tampa Bay’s defensive viability in this matchup.
Tampa Bay ranks 18th in defensive DVOA, but they haven’t played many quality opponents.
Detroit marks only the second time all year the Bucs played a team sixth or better in offensive DVOA, per ftnfantasy.com.
The last time they played a top-10 unit, Tampa surrendered 35 points in Seattle.
Now bettors are getting that defense in a sell-high spot against an offense in a buy-low position. Before a 17-point output against the Chiefs, Detroit scored 30+ in four straight.
There’s another factor I’m considering for this game: can Tampa’s offense stay on the field?
Bucky Irving, Chris Godwin and Mike Evans are likely all out. Emeka Egbuka also sustained an injury on Sunday.
If the Bucs offense struggles, it repeatedly puts pressure on the defense against a powerful offense.
Presumably, the line for Detroit’s team total comes in at 28.5 points. Dating back to the start of last season, the Lions overtook that benchmark 15 times in 25 games.
At home, Detroit cleared 28.5 points in nine of its last 12 games.
All of those metrics lead me to predict a buy-low spot on the Lions offense, presuming the team total opens at the aforementioned line.
