Based on Newcastle’s Summer sales and Andoni Iraola’s prior attacking success against the Newcastle defense, my Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction is Liverpool Over 1.5 Goals (-155).
My only qualm with this prediction is the lofty price. Viewed as a zero-sum equation, the Reds probably clear the line. Viewed against the implied chance (61%), it becomes less certain.
The case for optimism rests with Liverpool’s success in the prior meeting against Newcastle. Additionally, new manager Iraola dominated Newcastle as the Bournemouth manager.
Liverpool scored four against Newcastle at home in their last meeting. It marked the worst defensive performance of the season for the Magpies, who allowed three at home.
The latter needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Newcastle played down a man for the entire second half, allowing Liverpool to create chances.
But Newcastle begins the campaign with a new manager and an inferior midfield. Captain Bruno Guimaraes left for Arsenal while Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool lost Mo Salah, but the attack remains strong through the center. It showed in the last match as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike combined for 2.35 post-shot xG vs. Newcastle.
Iraola also led Bournemouth to four clearances of this benchmark in six matches against Newcastle. The sample includes six goals over the last three meetings.
When he brought Bournemouth to St. James’ Park last year, Iraola’s attack scored twice. They ran unlucky in the process, though, reaching three expected goals against the defense.
It’s a massive challenge for incoming Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle. Up until this point, he has never managed a club operating in Europe’s five biggest leagues.
Pair those factors with Iraola’s prior success against the Magpies, and I predict they score multiple goals at St. James’ Park.
