Steelers vs Patriots Prediction

Based on the Steelers’ poor offensive record against the Falcons and New England’s significant rest advantage, my Patriots vs Steelers prediction is the Steelers Under 18.5 Points.

New England will begin the contest owning a sizable rest advantage. Beyond full-game team totals, I would consider 1H team total unders for Pittsburgh.

Mike Vrabel’s squad played last Wednesday with ample time to prepare. Meanwhile, the Steelers face a normal week of preparation before traveling to New England.

In Week 1, the Steelers looked horrible on offense. While the team scored 20 points, it managed seven off a T.J. Watt pick-six that helped the Steelers to a 1-0 record.

Put simply, their offensive metrics looked disastrous. Pittsburgh ranked 30th in expected points added per play and 29th in offensive success rate. Only the Eagles succeeded at a lower rate.

Pittsburgh completely failed to establish the run. A 26.7% rushing success rate bettered only three teams, while their dropback success rate bettered only Atlanta.

If Pittsburgh fails to establish the run against New England, it will lead to consistent third-and-longs for Aaron Rodgers.

A quarterback that wants to avoid pressure and sacks is not built to handle those situations. In Week 1, I saw New England disrupt both Sam Darnold and Drew Lock with quick pressure.

The entire left side of the Steelers’ line is vulnerable to pressure. Rodgers avoided pressure in this game last year, but threw for only 139 yards, the third-lowest output of the year.

While the Steelers scored 21 points, they were aided by five turnovers from the defense. Their first touchdown drive started from their own 46 after a Rhamondre Stevenson fumble.

It’s unlikely that turnover luck repeats itself. Pair that with a poor offensive record in Week 1, and I predict the Steelers offense regresses in Week 2.
